Delhi government enhances land compensation

New Delhi: Bowing to protests, Delhi Government on Wednesday decided to give enhanced compensation to farmers in Kanjhawala area of north-west Delhi from whom around 1,100 acres of land were acquired six years ago.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, after a cabinet meeting, said her government will give revised special rehabilitation package to the land owners of four villages in North West district.

The farmers of the area have been holding series of protests for the last two years demanding better compensation.

Dikshit said the Cabinet decided to revise the rehabilitation package announced in September 2008 and a new package is being finalsed considering various factors.

The government had acquired land from the farmers in 2005 for various developmental projects of DSIIDC and Delhi Development Authority.

In 2005, government had offered to give Rs 11.80 lakh per annum/per acre for three years (Rs 35 lakh in three years).

As the process of giving compensation could not be completed during the stipulated period, the government had decided to revise the amount to Rs 53 lakh per acre in 2008 with a pre-condition that all court cases will have to be withdrawn by landowners.
