The opposition is up in arms against the Narendra Modi government, with both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) taking to street over charges being faced by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.
While AAP members staged protests outside the residence of Smriti Irani, members of the Congress party protested outside the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters in the national capital.
Members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has been in the line of fire over Jitender Singh Tomar's fake degree issue, gathered in large number outside the residence of the Union HRD Minister. They demanded Irani's resignation and arrest following the row over her educational degree.
AAP members raised slogans and placards outside the residence of Smriti Irani, who has been accused of giving false information about her educational qualification, in the national capital.
This comes a day after a Delhi court on Wednesday admitted a petition seeking action against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader. The case is slated to be heard on August 28.
Earlier on June 1, Metropolitan Magistrate Akash Jain had reserved the order on the plea after hearing arguments on the aspect of limitation and whether cognisance can be taken or not.
The complaint was filed by freelance writer Ahmer Khan, who alleged that Irani in her three affidavits before the EC while filing nominations for her candidature for Lok Sabha as well as Rajya Sabha polls had purportedly given different details about her educational qualification.
Meanwhile, the Congress staged protest outside the BJP headquarters in the national capital, alleging that the party was going soft on female ministers, clearly targeting External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, who are in the line of fire over Lalit Modi controversy.
The stepped up protests by AAP and Congress come a day after the government asserted that none of its ministers would resign.
Unfazed by the Congress's threat of derailing proceedings in the Monsoon session of Parliament, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that no BJP leader would step down. Singh said, "Our ministers do not have to resign; This is not their (Congress's) government, this is NDA government."
The remarks came as the opposition has upped the ante against BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj, Vasundhara Raje and Smriti Irani demanding their resignations.
