Guwahati: Prafulla Mahanta, the Assom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader and former chief minister has said that the BJP–AGP alliance would be successful in this election. Mahanta sounded confident that the an anti-Congress government will be formed in the state.
Speaking to CNN-IBN, he said, "This alliance will be successful, there will be a change in the government and an anti-Congress government will be formed in the state. There has been 15 years of misrule, no employment, no development, no industry, no pro-farmer schemes under Tarun Gogoi government. The people are fed up with the corruption"
Commenting on protest by some people over the AGP and BJP alliance, Mahanta said, "Protest is because of everyone wants to contest in the elections. But now alliance is in place, so things will settle down. Areas where the AGP is strong they should contest and after the election we will decide who would be the chief minister."
He added, "The last time when the AGP-BJP alliance was there, the BJP was a minor partner. Now that is not there. We hope we would win."
When asked whether they agree to BJP president Amit Shah's statement that the Bangladeshi Hindu migrants are welcome to India, Mahanta said, "The government should have a proper policy. On the basis of that they should decide on citizenship. If minorities is persecuted in Bangladesh and if the government wants to give citizenship, they should decide where they are made to stay. Assam cannot be the dustbin."
On the question of ageeing with BJP's nationalism, Mahanta said, "Everybody should be secular because our country is a secular country. But we should be united over the national issues. We should not play with sovereignty."
