Delhi: Riding on PM Narendra Modi's popularity , the BJP on Sunday emerged as the single largest party in Maharashtra and is set to form government in Haryana unseating the Congress in both the states. After Lok Sabha's debacle, the Assembly elections came as a big disappointment for the Congress party.
"Anti-incumbency, fatigue and a desire for change were the reasons why we lost. We should not get disturbed by our defeat as people just wanted change," Congress leader and former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dixit told reporters.
Sheila said, "One cannot just call the Congress corrupt. It did hurt our sentiments."
Elaborating on the Modi wave, Sheila Dixit said that the BJP had very clearly won because of the impact created by the Prime Minister. She said that Narendra Modi should not judge the situation so fast as he had won only one election, while the Congress had enjoyed two victories under Sonia Gandhi's rule.
"Modi continues to attract people. Let us see how long this lasts. The Congress was expecting this result," said Sheila Dixit.
Taking a dig at Congress's poor fortunes, Dixit said that it was time that the party made an effort to connect with the people. "We have to understand the change in the mindset of the people and revaluate our working," said Dixit.
