Mathura: With the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections round the corner, political parties are making a beeline to Mathura in the aftermath of the riots which claimed 24 lives.
The police on Sunday stopped Bharatiya Janata Party workers from entering Jawahar Bagh, the place where violence erupted.
"The Uttar Pradesh government never took any proper measures to prevent such an incident. Central agencies should be brought in to investigate the incident. Our state president has formed a team to look into the incident,"BJP MP Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said.
The Samajwadi Party hit back at the BJP accusing it of playing politics over the dead.
The mastermind behind the violent clashes has been confirmed dead. Police said Rambriksh Yadav, the leader of the splinter group of supporters of so-called spiritual teacher Jai Gurudev was among those killed in the violence.
"We have formed a probe team to look into the Mathura violence. Probe team will finish their work in 15 days. We will question the police and media persons who were there in Mathura," Aligarh Commissioner Chandrakant said.
At least 24 people, including Mathura Superintendent of Police (SP) Mukul Dwivedi and Station House Officer Santosh Kumar were killed during the violent protests on Thursday.
The violence is allegedly linked to the dispute between supporters of a so-called spiritual guru Jai Gurudev whose empire is estimated to be worth over Rs 12,000 crore. His supporters belonging to a splinter group, known as Swadheen Bharat Andolan, clashed with the police on Thursday when the force tried to evict them from Jawahar Bagh which they had been illegally occupying since 2014.
