Presidential poll: The uncertainty of the arithmetic
Presidential poll: The uncertainty of the arithmetic
As the numbers game becomes less and less predictable, here is a look at the uncertainty of the presidential poll.

New Delhi: As SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and TMC head Mamata Banerjee threw new names on Wednesday evening in the race for India's next President, the calculations of the various political formations have gone in a tizzy. Neither the UPA nor the NDA have the numbers to elect the President of their choice.

It was being hoped that Mamata and Mulayam will support UPA in their bid to make Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee as the President. But on Wednesday, those calculations were disturbed by Mulayam and Mamata who threw a political googly by naming ex-President APJ Abdul Kalam, PM Manmohan Singh and ex-Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, as their choices.

As the numbers game becomes less and less predictable, here is a look at the uncertainty of the presidential polls.

10, 98, 882: Total number of votes (5,49,408 of MPs and 5,49,474 of MLAs)

5,49,442: Minimum votes required for President to be elected

The UPA situation is:

UPA

Total Votes: 4,60,191(42%, including TMC)

Congress: 3,30,485

The votes with three crucial UPA allies are:

TMC: 48,049

SP: 68, 812

BSP: 43,349

Let's now look at the various possibilities:

UPA - TMC: 412142

UPA + SP: 529003

UPA - SP: 391379

Even if UPA goes without Mamata and with Mulayam and Mayawati, the numbers are: UPA - TMC + SP + BSP: 524303. The figure is still below the magic figure of 5,49,442.

On the other hand, the NDA has no numbers to push for its President. However, politics being a game of uncertainties, any possibility in future is difficult to rule out. Here are the NDA figures:

NDA

Total Votes: 304,785 (28%)

BJP: 2,23,885

In such a scenario, the non-UPA, non-NDA parties may end up playing a crucial role in deciding the next President. Left parties form a large part of this group.

NON-UPA, NON-NDA

Total Votes: 2,62,408 (24%)
