New Delhi: The battle for Uttar Pradesh is set to intensify with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) planning to launch an agitation against the Congress. This comes in the wake of Law Minister Salman Khurshid's promise of increasing the 4.5 per cent minority quota to 9 per cent if the Congress is voted to power.
However, Khurshid on Thursday said that he has not violated the model code of conduct by promising Muslim sub-quota as it's part of Congress manifesto.
"No new policy was announced. It was in consonance with the Congress policy and part of the party's manifesto," Khurshid said in his reply to the Election Commission.
The EC had issued notice to Khurshid and his wife, Louise who is a Congress candidate for the violation of model code of conduct, after the BJP complained calling the announcement unconstitutional.
Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi has complained to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying Khurshid had tried to undermine the authority of the Election Commission with his public utterances.
