Coimbatore: About 50 workers of Shiv Sena and Hindu Munnani were arrested on Thursday for attempting to stage black flag demonstrations against Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, who is on a visit to nearby Tirupur, in protest against his recent remarks on Hindu terror.
While 36 Sena workers were arrested at Gandhi Park area, 24 Munnani activists were taken into custody in Gandhipuram in the heart of the city, police said.
Meanwhile, workers of Hindu Makkal Katchi released in the air two pigeons, with black ribbon tied to their legs, to register their protest against Rahul.
In another incident, BJP and Shiv Sena workers released black balloons in Tirupur to show their protest against the Congress leader, who was scheduled to address party workers in the afternoon.
In retaliation, some youth Congress workers staged a picketing on the outskirts of Tirupur, resulting in brief traffic disruption, police said.
Secret documents released by Wikileaks recently had reported that Rahul Gandhi had told US Ambassador to India Timothy Roemer that the growth of radicalised Hindu terror groups may pose a greater threat to the country than Islamic terror groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba.
