New Delhi: Claiming high moral ground for suspending eight party MPs from Telangana region for disrupting the Lok Sabha, Congress on Wednesday said it has shown the way and asked Opposition leaders to learn from the action and ensure that the House transacts normal business.

However, party spokesperson Rashid Alvi vehemently denied that his remarks constitute any threat to the Opposition or that the action could be a pretext to take similar actions against Opposition members in future.

"We took action against our MPs in Lok Sabha as we wanted the House to run smoothly. Government and the Congress wanted the House to run without disruptions as decisions should be taken in Parliament on the issues of the country.

"We have tried to show a way through this that Parliament can also be run in this manner. We would like to appeal to other parties to ensure that the House runs smoothly," Alvi said.

Asked whether the action was meant to threaten the Opposition with similar treatment if its members disrupted Parliament, Alvi said, "There is no question of threatening the Opposition."

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a party leader said even the decision to suspend these MPs for four days was taken in consultation with Opposition leaders.
