Murshidabad: Violence continues to rock West Bengal panchayat elections on Sunday with at least three persons killed in Murshidabad ahead of fourth phase of polling on Monday.
Two Congress workers, Nurmohhamad Sheikh and Ahad Ali, died when they were hit by crude bombs hurled by rival party supporters at Kapasdanga under Beldanga Police Station of Murshidabad district late last night. Another party worker Repon Sheikh met a similar fate at Bharatpur during a clash between rival party supporters, police said.
In Basnti area of South 24 Parganas, alleged TMC workers torched about 50 houses and ransacked another 50 houses in CPM dominated village. Meanwhile, two TMC workers were hacked allegedly by CPM workers; both are in critical condition and are being moved to Kolkata for treatment.
Sporadic incidents of clash, including hurling of bombs and stone pelting, continued, which left several injured including two policemen in Kapasdanga area.
Murshidabad district Congress spokesman Ashok Das alleged that his party workers were targeted by the ruling TMC with active help from the CPI (M) cadres.
This even as West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan on Friday met the President and the Prime Minister and briefed them about the law and order situation in the state which has witnessed a spate of violence during the ongoing panchayat polls. "Many CRPF personnel are to be deployed. ... I hope they are deployed. It is important to ensure safety and security of people participating in the (panchayat) elections so that they give certain sense of confidence. I am hoping that they have been deployed," he said.
