Have you heard of Veerappan? He is regarded as one of the most feared bandits in the country, who spread terror in the hearts of many. A biographical web series about the bandit was released last year on ZEE5. It became a hit on the OTT platform. The show has reportedly crossed record high streaming numbers. The true crime docuseries titled Koose Munisamy Veerappan, based on the life of the wanted criminal, was released on December 14, 2023 on ZEE5. Recently, the streaming platform announced that the show has streamed a record 100 million minutes worldwide. Sharing the announcement on Instagram, ZEE5 Tamil wrote, “Breaking records and captivating audiences worldwide! Koose Munisamy Veerappan hits 100 million streaming minutes! The most sensational documentary series #KooseMunisamyVeerappan, is now streaming on #ZEE5.”

The series is created by Jeyachandra Hashmi, Prabbhavathi RV and Vasanth Balakrishnan, while Sharath Jothi has given the direction. It features real and unseen footage of the criminal, along with clips of the bandit’s own narration. The show carries 6-episodes and also features Veerappan’s interview with the veteran journalist Nakkeeran Gopal. In a statement, the journalist confirmed the authenticity of the show, saying, “We have invested huge efforts and taken significant risks to secure an interview with Veerappan.” He stated further, “For the first time, this detailed version of the interview will be presented in a documentary narrative to the audience on the ZEE5 OTT platform under the title Koose Munisamy Veerappan.”
The web series was produced by Prabbhavathi RV, under the banner of Dheeran Productions. The music in the show is composed by Satish Raghunathan.
Veerappan, a poacher, and smuggler was active for 36 years, before being killed by the Tamil Nadu special task force, in 2004. He was a poacher of elephants, having killed reportedly 500 elephants. He remained active in the forests of the states, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala. Apart from that, he is believed to have killed 184 people, most of those being police officers, and forest officials.
