LG has unveiled a 65-inch Ultra-High-Definition OLED TV with a flexible display that rolls up into its base. It will be on show at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show from Tuesday, January 9. Although still a prototype, this surprising TV could become a retail model by 2020, shaking up the TV market in spite of its inevitably high price tag. The roll-up screen makes the TV particularly discreet -- hidden away among the furniture when not in use, or only rolled out onto a wall when switched on.
This isn't the only remarkable TV that LG is bringing to CES 2018, as the manufacturer is also showcasing a "transparent" 55-inch OLED TV and the first ever 88-inch 8K OLED TV, upping the game once again with over 33 million pixels (7680×4320) -- 16 times more than regular Full HD (1920×1080) -- over an 88-inch display.
Apart from this, LG Electronics is developing technology designed to enable its appliances, televisions and other devices adapt to users and collaborate to handle tasks. The AI platform is "open" to utilizing software made by other companies, LG chief technology officer I.P. Park said during a press event on the eve of the official opening of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "The world has become just too complex for just any single company to insist on a proprietary, closed solution," Park said.
LG collaborators include Google and Alexa creator Amazon, according to the South Korea-based consumer electronics titan. "2018 will be the tipping point for the smart home and, more important, for the smart connected lifestyle," LG US marketing vice president David Vanderwaal said. Google Assistant is being integrated into LG products including televisions, headphones and smart speakers, Park said. "Our goal at Google is to help people get things done in a natural, seamless way," Google Assistant vice president of engineering Scott Huffman said.
