New Delhi: Facebook has activated its Safety Check feature for Chennai after heavy rainfalls caused massive flooding in the state of Tamil Nadu, forcing thousands out of their homes and bringing the city to a standstill.

The Safety Check feature allows users who are in the affected area mark themselves ‘safe’ to make friends and family feel assured.

The rains have affected local transport, airports and railways, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Schools, colleges, offices too have been shut. Electricity supply and telephone lines have also been impacted in many areas.

Financial loss owing to the unprecedented rains is estimated to exceed Rs 15,000 crore. 197 lives have been lost in what is said to be the worst downpour in a hundred years.

After a recent controversy, Facebook agreed to activate the feature other than during naturally caused disasters.
