“From a small-town boy in Shimla to walking the red carpet at global film festivals, I’ve journeyed through 500 films, countless roles and a lifetime of learning,” said Anupam Kher.

Anupam Kher is gearing up for his upcoming rom-com Metro In Dino which will hit theatres on Nomvember 29. The multi-starrer film features actors Konkona Sen Sharma, Aditya Roy Kapur, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sara Ali Khan, Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Neena Gupta in prominent roles. Ahead of the release of the Anurag Basu directorial, the actor said that the “greatest role is always the next one”. Kher, who has played over 500 characters, revealed about his early years, his breakthrough role and journey that shaped his illustrious career.

Hailing from the picturesque hills of Shimla, Kher muses, “If life is a movie, I’ve been blessed with a blockbuster.”. The 69-year-old recounted that he came to Mumbai with just Rs 37 in his pocket. He juggled through various roles, and eventually landed his breakthrough role that defined his career and earned him several awards. This film also changed his perspective on life, instilling in him the belief that age is merely a number as he played the role of a 65-year-old man at the age of 28. Can you guess the film? It’s none other than Saaransh, a cinematic gem that premiered four decades ago.

The actor further said that he “embraced variety”, seamlessly transitioning from “comic relief to dramatic characters”. He not only showcased his talent in both Hollywood and Bollywood but also graced the theatre stage, pouring his heart into performances “with a passion that never fades”.

Kher, who came from a humble Hindi-medium background and made a mark in global cinema, embodies the mantra that “limitations exist only in the mind”: “I don’t see failures, I see lessons. I don’t just live life, I experience it. Whether it’s through films, books, or speaking engagements, my goal is simple: Inspire others to find their own path while laughing at the little things along the way.”

“My next role is always my favourite one!” he further expressed. His film career is a “testimony to resilience, passion and the unshakeable belief that failure is an event, never a person”.
