We can all agree that losing weight is probably one of the most daunting tasks. It is a daily battle to make the stubborn body fat vanish. In most cases, the battle involves a sacrifice of our favourite dishes. An analysis published in The Lancet journal reveals that over 1 billion children and adults globally are obese. Given this widespread issue, when someone aims to lose weight, many recommend focusing on controlling their eating habits. It is one of the foremost ways and a stepping stone to your weight loss journey. Is it the same with everyone? Apparently not, because a woman from East Sussex, England has lost 44 kg in 10 months without changing an ounce of her eating habits. Sounds impossible? Well let us see how she did it.
Mary Watkins struggled with obesity since her school days. When she was pregnant with her elder son, Freddy, she faced health complications such as high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia. As a result, Freddy was born premature and weak, which made her feel guilty. Once Freddy started attending school, he was also bullied on in school due to his mother’s size.
After facing unsuccessful attempts to lose weight, including fasting, Mary decided to join Slimming World. Through their program, she successfully shed 44 kg. Remarkably, Mary has maintained this weight loss for seven years. Inspired by her own journey, she opened her own Slimming World group to support and assist other individuals in their weight loss endeavours. Mary’s dedication and achievements have been recognised, as she has been named Slimming World’s Top Target Consultant for 2024.
Mary, who resides in Crowborough with her husband Dafydd, her 11-year-old son Freddie and eight-year-old Walter, quickly embraced Slimming World’s healthy eating plan. She began implementing new healthy habits for the entire family, such as cooking from scratch more often and opting to walk to school instead of driving. Reflecting on her experience, Mary shares, “My previous attempts at losing weight had left me feeling hungry and irritable, so I honestly anticipated a similar outcome this time around.”
She was pleasantly surprised to find herself cooking nutritious meals for the whole family. Dishes like spaghetti Bolognese, Moroccan tagines with couscous, or chilli with homemade chips became staples in their household.
Mary recalls her journey began with walking, initially accompanying Freddie to nursery and then proceeding to her Slimming World group. As she gained confidence, she transitioned to running short distances around the block. Gradually, she increased her stamina and eventually achieved a significant milestone by completing a 10K race, a feat she holds with immense pride. She says no food was banned and she could eat as she liked provided the physical exertion was maintained.
Experts believe that the key to losing weight is not to eat less but to be able to burn more calories than you consume. So even if you eat more and intake more calories, if vigorous exercise can burn more than that, you are still likely to lose weight, hence Mary’s journey is not surprising.
