Whoever claimed that Vijay Mallya only tweets (or posts) on holidays and festivals must have missed the recent buzz around Royal Challengers Bangalore’s victory in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024. As the women’s team, under the leadership of Smriti Mandhana, secured the title by defeating the Delhi Capitals in a thrilling final, Mallya, the former owner of RCB’s men’s team, didn’t miss a beat. He congratulated the women’s team who surged to victory in only the second season of the WPL while the men’s squad is still chasing the elusive Indian Premier League (IPL) crown.
“Heartiest congratulations to the RCB Women’s Team for winning the WPL,” penned Mallya on ‘X’.

Meanwhile, the former bigwig of United Breweries and United Spirits found himself in hot water, facing convictions in absentia for economic offenses including theft and money laundering, alongside contempt charges from the Delhi Supreme Court following the 2012 collapse of his Kingfisher Airways into bankruptcy.
In March 2016, he hightailed it to Britain to dodge arrest, leaving behind a consortium of banks high and dry to the tune of £1.14 billion. While Indian financial authorities have seized assets to offset the debt, the specter of criminal charges looms large.
By 2021, Mallya’s legal gambit to stay put in the UK hit a dead end when the Supreme Court in London slammed the door shut on his appeal, deeming his case bereft of any fresh grounds for consideration. Rumor has it, Mallya still resides in Britain, ensconced in an estate at Tewin, Hertfordshire, and a swanky mansion in trendy Regent’s Park, London.

Yet, despite his legal woes, Mallya refuses to fade into obscurity online. A cursory glance at his ‘X’ timeline reveals a penchant for posting during Indian festivities, often dovetailing with bank holidays. Whether it’s New Year, Holi, Eid, or Dussehra, his tweets consistently echo the rhythm of these occasions.
