What Is Tinselling And Why Is Internet Worried About This Christmas Dating Trend
Tinselling- the name draws inspiration from the shiny, cheerful veneer of tinsel, which is used to decorate during the festive season, covering what is beneath.

As the holiday season approaches, couples often find themselves immersed in the festive spirit, adorned with glittering decorations and heartwarming traditions. However, amidst the joyous ambiance, a cautionary trend has emerged, termed tinselling by relationship expert Tina Wilson. This phenomenon, likened to the deceptive look of tinsel, involves couples masking or hiding underlying issues beneath a facade of holiday cheer. Tina Wilson, founder and CEO of Wingman, observes that during the holidays, couples tend to avoid addressing significant relationship issues, opting instead for the illusion of seasonal harmony.

The superficial veneer of Christmas joy becomes a cover-up for unresolved problems, creating what Wilson describes as a “deliberate distraction.”

The name draws inspiration from the shiny, cheerful veneer of tinsel, which is used to decorate during the festive season, covering what is beneath,” Wilson told Tyla. “During the holiday season, couples tend to shy away from the bigger issues, often in hopes of a Christmas miracle,” Wilson said.

Identifying the warning signs of ‘tinselling,’ Wilson points out partners excessively immersed in the holiday spirit, showering each other with presents and joy, yet consistently deflecting serious conversations until after Christmas. This avoidance strategy, according to Wilson, sets the stage for a harsh awakening in the New Year when reality can no longer be ignored.

Nicole Sodoma, a Marriage-Loving Divorce Attorney and author, concurs that avoiding problems through tinselling offers no resolution. She emphasises the danger of using this approach to navigate the holidays, neglecting signs indicating issues within the relationship. Waiting for the inevitable to happen, she warns, may lead to a surge in divorce filings, earning January the unfortunate nickname of “divorce month.”

“Tinselling is an easy way to get through the holidays by ignoring the signs that are telling you something is broken or not right for you in the relationship. “So, why wait for the inevitable to happen?” Sodoma told The Post.

As couples grapple with the perils of ‘tinselling,’ this isn’t the only dating trend capturing attention this year. The Penny method, labeled as the most toxic trend of the year, involves gradually diminishing effort in a relationship until minimal satisfaction is achieved. Another toxic relationship trait is Ground Hogging. It entails repeatedly pursuing the same type of person while expecting different outcomes, a pattern with its own set of pitfalls.
