India’s urban transport system is likely to undergo a complete overhaul soon. As part of the proposal, the Government of India plans to integrate metro and bus networks and adopt clean fuel.
The plan also aims to address inefficiencies, including the overlapping bus and metro routes, resulting in reduced revenue, The Times Of India reported.
Apart from the adoption of clean fuel, especially in small trucks, states will also receive assistance in aligning metro and bus routes to improve viability, according to the report.
At present, public bus networks across India are managed by state governments or government undertakings such as the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) or municipal bodies. Metro networks, on the other hand, are operated by joint ventures between states and the central government. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is one such example.
To improve overall efficiency and effectiveness, a government official told TOI that there was a need for synergy between these networks.
The official further stressed that government agencies across the world were assisting public transport networks. The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) as well as the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport model for public transport are solutions for enhancing bus viability, the official said. The state transport undertaking should develop economic models for them, similar to real estate management agencies.
Besides, the official also said that while the government is already providing support for the deployment of electric buses through subsidy schemes, such concessions weren’t available for commercial vehicles.
Financial support for the electrification of small commercial vehicles that largely move goods within cities could also help, the official said.
