Shri Siddaroodha Swami Matha is one of the two top Lingayat shrines in Karnataka. The temple is popular for many specialities. Considered a remarkable religious institution for all devotees, the Math was built to honour the memory of Shri Siddharoodha Swami as he took up ‘Samadhi’ in 1929. Among the many attractions in the temple, the primary one is the tambourine which has not touched the ground for years.
In addition to that, the temple also has an earthen lamp lit for years. Shri Siddaroodha Swamy was believed to have spiritual power and performed various miracles during his lifetime. Even today, in his remembrance, tambourines are honoured and lamps are lightened.
The tambourine, in the temple, is played by the saints. Over the past nine decades, this tambourine has not been kept on the ground. No matter what time you reach the temple, you will always find people chanting Om Shivaya Namah and Omkara standing in front of Siddaroodha’s sword.
Notably, the tambourine was brought to the temple by Siddaroodha himself. He got the musical instrument from Pandharapur. It is located in Maharashtra. In 1929, after Swami ji took up Samadhi, his disciples started the tradition of playing the tambourine and providing the opportunity of doing swara seva to the devotees.
Swaraseva is celebrated by playing tambourine in front of Siddaroodha’s Gadugu. The sadhus keep passing on the musical instrument every two hours and play this tambourine while chanting the Shivaya Namah mantra.
It is also believed that Arudha Jyoti was also lit after Siddaroodha attained salvation. Be it day or night, rainy or sunny, the lamp has not been extinguished since then. Devotees arriving at the temple offer oil to this lamp which is a testimony to the popularity of Shri Siddaroodha Swami.
