The market ended with modest loss amid volatile trade. The Sensex closed down over 20 points. Metal, technology, pharma, auto and capital goods stocks were the main draggers of the market.

Mumbai: The market ended with modest loss amid volatile trade. The Sensex closed down over 20 points. Metal, technology, pharma, auto and capital goods stocks were the main draggers of the market. However, banking, FMCG and some oil stocks gained.

The market ended with modest loss amid volatile trade. The Sensex closed down 1.99 points or 0.02 per cent at 10801.72. It touched an all-time high of 10896.39.

The Nifty closed down 7.30 points or 0.23 per cent at 3195.35. It touched an all-time high of 3223.45.

The CNX Midcap Index closed down 17.30 points or 0.37 per cent at 4631. It touched an all-time high of 4686.65.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed down 51.33 points or 0.81 per cent at 6318.90. The BSE Midcap Index closed down 13.09 points or 0.26 per cent at 5066.

MTNL, Satyam, Hindalco, Ranbaxy Labs and Tata Power were the biggest index losers.

SBI, HLL, Dabur India, HDFC and Reliance were the biggest index gainers.

The market breadth was negative, about 921 shares advanced, 1549 shares declined, and 74 shares remained unchanged.

The total market turnover today was at Rs 49,042.68 crore.

The BSE Metal Index underperformed the other indices. It closed down 1.49 per cent at 7530.49 amid losses in Hindustan Zinc, Hindalco, Sesa Goa, Nalco, Sail, Sterlite Industries, Gujarat NRE Coke, JSW Steel and Jindal Steel.

Technology stocks like Satyam, MMphasiS BFL, Wipro, Patni Computer and TCS also witnessed selling pressure. The BSE IT Index closed down 0.83 per cent at 3851.99.

Losses were also seen in pharma, auto and capital goods stocks.

The BSE Healthcare Index closed down 0.72 per cent at 3605.85 and the BSE Auto Index closed down 0.59 per cent at 5273.27. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed down 0.35 per cent at 8095.

However, FMCG stocks like McDowell, Shaw Wallace, HLL, Dabur India, P&G and Britannia gained. The BSE FMCG Index closed up 0.77 per cent at 2050.14.

Some buying was also seen in consumer durables and oil stocks.

The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed up 0.75 per cent at 3211.34 and the BSE Oil & Gas Index closed up 0.46 per cent at 4567.67.
