From song requests to a fun chat, Network18’s Rising India – She Shakti event witnessed several heart-warming moments between President of India Droupadi Murmu and singer Asha Bhosle. The veteran playback singer was felicitated for her contribution to the field of music and presented a memento by President Murmu at the conclave that celebrated women achievers and pioneers across sectors.
The President received Bhosle warmly on stage and, after a quick greeting, walked up to the podium to request the singer to sing a song of her choice. Bhosle gracefully accepted and treated the President and audience to a rendition of Radha Kaise Na Jale from Lagaan.
When President Murmu requested Bhonsle to pick a song of her choice, the singer picked the classic Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko… from the 1977 flick Hum Kisise Kum Naheen. As soon as the singer started crooning to Chura Liya…, the audience let out a cheer for this was the song that took Bhosle’s popularity to new heights back in the day and remains a cult favourite among her fans.
After the impromptu performance, Bhosle and President Murmu shared a warm chat off-mic, following which the latter, in a poignant gesture, escorted the singer to the edge of the stage.
Bhosle began her musical journey in the late 1940s, singing songs such as Chupke Chupke Mast Nigaahen, Baadal Ghir Aaye, Rimjhim Paani Barse before she went on to sing hits like Kehdoon Tumhen (Deewar), Yeh Vaada Raha (Yeh Vaada Raha), Nahin Nahin, Abhi Nahin (Jawani Diwani), Kitaabe Bahut Si (Baazigar), Yeh Raat Aur Yeh Doori (Andaz Apna Apna), Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main (Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge) and Dil Le Gayi Le Gayi (Dil To Pagal Hai).
The She Shakti initiative aims to honour the accomplishments of women and serves as a platform to showcase their achievements, share stories, and inspire a new generation of leaders.
As underlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has now entered a women-led development phase. The advancement towards becoming a developed nation is closely linked to the active participation of Indian women. ‘Rising India-She Shakti’ seeks to amplify the recognition of women who not only broke the glass ceiling, but also broke gender stereotypes and inspired Atmanirbharta (self-reliance).
President of India Droupadi Murmu was the Chief Guest of the evening. The conclave also saw participation of influential personalities such as Women & Child Development Minister Smriti Irani and many other women achievers.
