New Delhi: Chelsea have confirmed on their official website that the fiercely competitive midfielder Michael Ballack has signed a new contract that will keep him in west London until at least 2010.
The player is clearly pleased to have inked the new contract, which has guaranteed his immediate future at one of Europe's top clubs in the season leading up to next year's World Cup in South Africa, and is also delighted to be working alongside Chelsea's new manager Carlo Ancelotti.
"I am very happy to be staying at Chelsea for one more year as it was always my intention to play in London at least until the World Cup in 2010," the German told the Blues' website.
"We had a fantastic end to the season winning the FA Cup and we are all looking forward to taking this success into the new season under Carlo Ancelotti, our new manager."
The club themselves confirmed that the deal was mutually pleasing, releasing a statement on their website which read:
"Michael has been a key member of our team for three years so we are naturally very happy that we have agreed the extension."
A new spirit seems to have swept through Chelsea in the wake of Guus Hiddink's short spell at the club, and Ballack's commitment for another year is a good sign that that momentum will be maintained.
