KOCHI: For enhancing the operations of the Motor Vehicles Department in Ernakulam, the department will be allotted another two-acres of land in Thuthiyoor near Kakkanad. The decision has been taken by the district administration and the 2.5 acre land would be handed over to the department once the work of filling the land is over. The Motor Vehicles Department is currently operating from the Collectorate building and has very little space there. “We do not have any space to park the seized vehicles used in illegal activities and traffic law breaking. There are more than 20 such vehicles dumped in front of the Collectorate,” a Motor Vehicles Department official said. According to Ernakulam Regional Transport Officer T J Thomas, “The office will continue to operate from the Collectorate building and the new land will be used to park the seized vehicles. Our major problem is that we do not have any separate yard to keep the seized vehicles. We are also planning to conduct license examination and driving tests on this new land,” he said.“It would take more time to start operations at the yard as the allotted land is located in a very low lying area and would take time to fill the entire area with sand. We are hoping that the land will be ready for use within a year,” Thomas said.
