CHENNAI: The entire area adjoining the Kodingiyur dumpyard was engulfed in smoke on Monday after a fire broke out. Three fire engines were roped in to put out the flames. Residents living near the dumpyard said that the fire began on Morning morning. While they gathered outside the yard’s gate to check the reason for the unusually dense smoke, they were allegedly told by the Corporation authorities that it was part of some maintenance work. However, when the smoke became unbearable by afternoon, they called up the Fire and Rescue Service. That the fire was seen in patches across the dump yard suggested that it was human-induced, a fire service official said. According to the officer, such fires have now become a routine affair in the yard, where unauthorised persons can enter without any check. He said that the matter had already been taken up with the Corporation, which had promised action soon. He said that a fire of such nature always took a long time to put out. “We have called in five water tankers to assist us. We hope to reduce the smoke by tonight,” the officer said, adding that the police will register a case to see who started the fire. Residents in the R R Nagar housing board, located near the yard, said that this was at least the fourth time this year that such fires have broke out in the yard. “Children suffer the most. Even today, many kept crying all through the morning as the dense smoke were irritating the eyes and lungs,” said Mariappan, a resident. The residents wanted the city Corporation to keep a vigil on both outsiders as well as the workers to ensure that such an incident was not repeated.
