BANGALORE: The Lokayukta special court adjourned the hearing of the former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa’s bail petition in the land denotification case till Monday. The hearing also became a platform for defence counsels to argue that there was strong political motive behind the private cases filed against the former CM.During the proceedings on Saturday, Yeddyurappa’s counsel Uday Lalit argued before the court for about five hours requesting the court to grant bail to his client. In his argument, Lalit raised questions about the credibility of complainants, Sirajin Basha and Balakrishna, who are also advocates.“The duo, instead of filing the case with the Lokayukta, went directly to the Governor and filed private cases. Even the Governor’s sanction for prosecution was questionable. This has raised questions whether there is public interest or political motive behind the filing of the case,” Lalit argued.Later, Yeddyurappa’s other counsel, Ravi B Nayak, said a politician who has two wives, was behind the complainants. To this, C H Hanumantharaya, the advocate of the complainants, said even Yeddyurappa was an accused in the suspicious death of his wife. The judge, N K Sudhindra Rao, asked the lawyers to argue only the case and not raise personal issues of the accused or complainant.Yeddyurappa failed to appear before the court for hearing on Saturday. His advocates pleaded with the court to exempt him for the day’s hearing as he had gone to participate in the Hyderabad-Karnataka Liberation Day celebration in Gulbarga, for which the judge gave his consent. Yeddyurappa’s sons B Y Raghavendra and B Y Vijayendra, son-in-law Sohan Kumar, sister Akkamahadevi, former minister Krishnaiah Setty, MLA Hemachandra Sagar and other accused appeared before the court.
