BANGALORE: BWSSB worker Prabhat Singh (35) lost his life, and another worker, Satinder Singh, sustained grievous injuries when wet mud caved in on top of them while laying a water pipeline. The workers were laying the 1800 mm pipe line for the Second phase of the Cauvery water IV stage works. The incident took place at 3.10 pm in Gottigere. According to locals, there was no engineer or contractor present during most of the day and work was being carried out unsupervised.But the same site was visited by the erstwhile BBMP commissioner Bharath Lal Meena, who had directed to dig up and demolish buildings allegedly encroached upon by the residents and builders to make way for a RajaKaluve. “But after the digging the BBMP did not carry this forward and the crater was filled up with loose mud,” residents of that locality informed. “There were 3 people working on the pipe line in the dug up area while nearly 10 of us were on top. Suddenly we heard screams and saw that one person was buried completely while the other person was buried waist deep and was screaming for help,” Arjun Singh, a co-worker said. Prabhat Singh hailed from Shrumjal in Patna district of Bihar and his wife and three children live there, his co-workers informed. The injured Satinder Singh was taken to the hospital and he is said to have sustained injuries in his leg.The BWSSB on the other hand termed the incident as an accident and stated that the workers were experienced. They also said that they would decide a compensation which could range between Rs. 7 and Rs. 10 lakh for the family of the deceased. A case has been registered in the Hulimavu police station in this regard and further investigations are being held by the police. The police have confirmed that they have filed section 304(a) in the case of deceased , 337 and 338 in the case of the injured victim, against Jitender, a contractor of Pratiba Industries.
