KOCHI: With the State government giving its nod for the construction of a new solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram, the Corporation is waiting for the official communication from the authorities on the technology finalisation. There were reports that the Suchitwa Mission had already recommended German technology for the new plant. “Suchitwa Mission is the sole authority to finalise the technology to be used for the plant which will be then approved by the State government. So far we have not received any notification from the State government on the technology for the new plant,” said a top Corporation official. He said that the final decision would be taken by the State government. “Once the technology is finalised, we will get an official notification from the authorities. The whole process will be done in consultation with the Corporation. The same will be presented at the Council for its approval,” he said. The official said that the bid proceedings will be handled by the government. “If the technology opted by them is patented by certain companies then they can only participate in the bid. In some cases, the technology will be patented by a single company, then it can only go for the bid,” he added. The construction of the new plant will be done on a Public-Private-Participation (PPP) mode. The new plant will be set up on the 40-acres of total 100-acres  land owned by the civic body at Brahmapuram. Last week, the State government had given its nod for the construction of a new solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram.  Apart from the new plant, it is also decided to set up a new industrial unit at Brahmpuram which will be beneficial to the residents of the area. There are also reports that the Suchitwa Mission has suggested a new plant with a capacity to treat 500 tonnes of waste per day, at  Brahmapuram. It will work on a German technology. Once constructed, the new plant is expected to cater to the solid waste treatment requirements of Kochi as well as the neighbouring municipalities.
