Traffic signals in several parts of the city have became defunct. The signal at Vazhuthacaud has not been working for the past two days. The situation is similar at General Hospital Junction and Attakulangara.
When contacted, Assistant Commissioner, Traffic (South), P Mohanan said the matter was brought to the notice of Keltron, which maintains the signals in the city. He said Keltron has started correcting the signal at Attakulangara. Fluctuation in timings was the cause of the malfunction, according to him. “The signals will be repaired soon,” he said.
The police and home guards in charge of maintaining traffic at busy junctions such as Vazhuthacaud and General Hospital Junction are having a tough time. Both Vazhuthacaud and General Hospital Junction are notorious for traffic congestion, especially after the renovation of the junctions.
At some other junctions, though the signals are working smoothly, the intervention of Traffic Police is needed to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. Traffic Police too are present to control the vehicle flow at Vellayambalam, where the country’s first vehicle-actuated traffic signal has been installed.
Meanwhile, the city is witnessing heavy traffic congestion during the peak hours and more and more vehicles are getting diverted owing to agitations in front of Secretariat. Rush hours are tough times for pedestrians as well as motorists.
