COIMBATORE: In an incident that has sent shock waves among animal rights activists, a man reportedly killed several dogs and cats in a residential area here by feeding them with poison-laced fish meat a day after he was chased by a dog. Residents of Poonga Nagar at Peelamedu were appalled on Wednesday when they found as many as seven dogs and two cats mysteriously dead in the area.  Their obvious suspicion fell on Ramesh Babu, who on Tuesday evening had publicly said that he was going to kill dogs as he was chased by stray dogs on the street.  “We thought he was just talking in anger. We were shocked when we found dogs and cats lying dead in many houses,” said B Vijaya, a resident, who had lost her pet to the bizarre act. Locals said Ramesh Babu, of Neelambur, had recently moved into in the area and was chased by a dog when he came to collect advance from his tenant. Two of the dead dogs were pregnant.  “When the doctor cut open their bodies for postmortem, it was found that one of the dogs was carrying seven offsprings and another four offsprings. It was a chilling scene to watch the last moments of the unborn canines after it was taken out of their mother’s body,” said Kalpana Vasudevan of Blue Cross. While the residents informed the police soon after the incident, Ramesh Babu, who was suspected behind for killing, went absconding.“We have registered a case under IPC 428 and he may be sentenced for two years if he was convicted. We have ascertained his identity and will soon arrest him,” said Peelamedu station Inspector Jeevanantham.
