New Delhi: Expressing concern over the threat posed to the livelihood of a number of rickshaw pullers in the wake of Delhi High Court's order of banning rickshaws in Chandni Chowk area, a panel of social activists on Wednesday urged the Government to consider the issue.
"Banning rickshaws is no solution to the growing traffic problem in the capital. The rickshaw pullers who are already bearing the atrocities of the traffic police, will lose their bread if such a step is taken," said Nalin Singh of the Initiative for Transportation & Development Programme (ITDP) at a forum it organised here.
Calling upon the rickshaw pullers to fight for their livelihood, MP, Devendra Prasad Yadav said that he would try to initiate a debate on the issue in the winter session of Parliament.
He said that the poor from the country's east come to the national capital to find employment, "but here too they have to struggle for it."
Social activist Madhu Kishwar urged all working for the cause to join hands in taking the issue to court.
"Besides, we must organise a 'Rickshaw Bachao Andolan' and initiate a signature campaign to make people acknowledge how important rickshaws are in their daily lives," she said.
Representing the rickshaw pullers' union, Surjit Singh Kitty said that rickshaws are the pride of Delhi and would continue to remain so.
AITUC secretary Satyanarain Thakur said that it had become a question of policy before the Government whether they want to abolish the traditional system of transportation or strengthen it.
