KOCHI: Former MLA and Kerala Congress leader Eapen Varghese, 79, passed away at a private hospital here on Wednesday. He was undergoing treatment for liver cancer. He is survived by wife Annamma, a son and five daughters. Varghese was an MLA twice. He represented Palluruthy constituency in 1971 and Ranni in 1987. He faced defeat in the 1980 and 1991 elections from Pathanamthitta. After his defeat in 1991, he had left electoral politics. He had served as the working chairman of the Kerala Congress (Joseph), but later shifted to Kerala Congress (Secular). He was an advisor of the Kerala Congress (M).Varghese was also a member of the KFC, Fisheries Advisory Board and president of the Club International Cochin. The funeral will be held at Amaravathi St George Mar Thoma Church on Thursday.
