ERODE: In what is being seen as the first confirmed case of swine flu (H1N1 influenza) this season in Tamil Nadu, a patient from Erode patient is in a critical state at a private hospital here.Elangovan, a resident of Manickampalayam village in Erode, was admitted to a private hospital in Erode on September 17, for fever. As antibiotics failed to work, he was referred to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, on Tuesday. “We were ready to admit him on Tuesday, but his relatives opted to put him in a private hospital here,” said CMCH Resident Medical Officer P Sivaprakasam.He was admitted to Sri Ramakrishna Hospital on Tuesday and the lab report found him positive of swine flu. “He was in a critical condition when he was admitted here and swine flu was identified late. His condition is still critical. We have put him on ventillator,” duty doctors of Intensive Care Unit in Ramakrishna Hospital told Express on Thursday.Deputy Director of Health Services S Senthil Kumar said this was the only case of swine flu in the district till now. “This one was an isolated case from Erode district. People need not panic. Anyway, I have asked my department officials to be alert. Coimbatore district is fully prepared to tackle any possible outbreak of the disease,” he informed.
