HYDERABAD: A former People's War Group (PWG) member was arrested by the Task Force sleuths for extorting money from government officials in the name of party fund here on Wednesday.Rachakonda Laxmaiah (43) alias Satyam alias Sagar alias Sampath alias Sai alias Chandrasekhar, joined the PWG, the erstwhile Maoist party, in 1988 as a militant. A native of Nagaram village in Valigonda mandal of Nalgonda district, Laxmaiah became a full-fledged work er of the group in 1992. He worked as a courier to former PWG leaders like Kiran Kumar, Jeevan Kumar alias M Bala Krishna. He has also worked as a courier of Erram Reddy Santosh Reddy alias Mahesh, secretary of AP State Committee and Central Committee Member of the PWG. However, Jeevan Kumar and Santosh Reddy were killed in encounters with police. Laxmaiah came out of group in 1997 and surrendered. He then got married. "Laxmaiah was having a difficulty in running the family due to financial problems. He used to make calls to several higher government officials in various districts posing himself as the secretary of the Maoist party in a particular district, demanding money for organising a plenary,'' said M Srinivasulu, Task Force additional deputy commissioner of Police.If the official does not heed to his demands, he threatens them of dire consequences, Srinivasulu added. Several officials had given him the money fearing his threats.A trap was laid and Laxmaiah was arrested. Police seizes cell phones, a pocket note book containing contact numbers of several government officials and and four empty letter heads of Maoist party.
