THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Trivandrum Global City of Innovation (TGCi) and Veda Dharma Parishat jointly organised a workshop on the manufacturing of solar-powered reading lamps developed by TGCi which was attended by over 20 students and seven teachers. The students were split into teams of four and taken through a step-by-step workshop, understanding the circuitry before moving to the design and creation of the lamps. The winning team created a sturdy reading lamp under half-a-foot tall. ‘’With this solar/LED lamp, a student can study at night using energy from the sun whilst turning off fluorescent lights. If one hundred thousand children were to do this, then Kerala would experience a valuable energy saving and reduce waste from fluorescent bulbs. This is a simple and powerful way to support the region with renewable energy and practical waste management, and at the same time, educating students in renewable technology and creativity,’’ TGCI MD Alexei Levene said in a statement. ‘’We look forward to expanding the programme to more schools in the region,’’ said Veda Dharma Parishat secretary K A Madhusoodanan.
