BANGALORE: Dharmadhikari of Dharmastala Dr D Veerendra Heggade has urged the State Government and the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) to help people in rural areas.Speaking after receiving Sir M Visvesvaraya Memorial Award at a programme organised to mark 151st birth anniversary of engineer-statesman Sri M Visvesvaraya on Thursday, he emphasised on the need for skilled labour by pointing out that with each passing day, more jobs are being created. Dr Heggade said schemes to impart skills to labourers must be aimed at imparting knowledge and not just giving instruments. FKCCI honoured Dr Heggade by conferring on him the Visvesvaraya Memorial Award, which was instituted by FKCCI in 1999 and has seen awardees like N Narayana Murthy, Azim Premji and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw. Dr Heggade is also the president of Dharmastala Manjunatheshwara Educational Trust, which manages institutions ranging from primary schools to engineering colleges. His trust also undertakes the renovation of ancient temples and monuments having restored 125 such monuments to date. He has established a rural development and self employment training institute in collaboration with Syndicate and Canara banks. He was awarded the Padmabhushan by the Government of India in 2000 in recognition for his efforts.Chief Minister, D V Sadananda Gowda, Large and Medium Scale Industries Minister Murugesh Nirani and Minister for Urban Development Suresh Kumar and the office-bearers of FKCCI were present on the occasion.
