I am deeply saddened by the assault on thinkers: former prime minister Manmohan Singh

New Delhi: In the midst of alleged intolerance in the country, former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Friday expressed his sorrow over the way NDA government handled the raging issue.

In last couple of weeks more than 40 filmmakers, writers and intellectuals returned their national award in protest against the growing violence and intolerance allegedly instigated by the rightwing groups in India.

Speaking at the inauguration of national conference to commemorate 125th Birth Anniversary of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on 'No peace without freedom; no freedom without peace’, Singh said, “I am deeply saddened by the assault on thinkers. I personally believe that suppression due to caste and creed cannot be accepted”.

“Suppression of dissent poses great danger and no religion can become a basis of public policy in a secular state. I would like say that peace is essential not only for freedom but also for our economic growth and intellectual development,” he said.

On the context of “Nehruvian” ideology, the former PM said, “Freedom lies at the center of the Nehruvian idea. He was a champion of the post colonial world, the foremost disciple of Mahatma Gandhi. He was not just the first Prime Minister but also he was the architect of modern Republic.”
