Jasmine nurseries wilt as worms take over

RAMANATHAPURAM: Not all is well with the jasmine nurseries at Thankatchimadam and Mandapam seashores here. Citrus caterpillars and other types of worms that feed on the saplings are giving sleepless nights to the farmers engaged in jasmine cultivation in the area.Jasmine farms occupy almost 300 acres of land at Thankatchimadam, Notchi Oorani and other areas. The rooted saplings are sold from these farms for Rs 1,600 to Rs 1,800. The price differs when the saplings are sold through agents, who come from places such as Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Mumbai. Some farmers also send saplings as parcels. A reasonable demand for rooted jasmine saplings exists in other states. Generally, the farmers sell saplings thrice a year. But this year, the sales have been affected as citrus caterpillars and some green worms have been attacking the saplings in a big way. “Delayed rains have contributed to the high incidence of worm attacks this year. The horticulture department officials do not visit the nurseries regularly,” farmers rued. Some farmers have decided to procure pesticides to save the jasmine saplings.  Horticulture Department deputy director Rajendran told Express that no complaints of worm attacks have been brought to their notice so far. He added that the agricultural officials would soon carry out an inspection in the affected spots.
