Chandigarh: After Haryana CM’s assurance to withdraw all FIRs against Jats in connection with 20I6 quota stir, the community has decided to call off their rally in Jind which was scheduled to ‘derail’ BJP chief Amit Shah’s bike rally.
The All India Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (AIJASS) had threatened to disrupt Shah’s Jind rally on February 15, alleging non-fulfilment of their demands, following which Haryana had sought 150 companies of central forces as a preventive measure.
While nearly one lakh motorists were supposed to participate in BJP president’s rally, the Jat body had organised a parallel rally with 50,000 tractor-trolleys to disrupt Shah’s event.
The decision to call off AIJASS rally was announced late on Sunday night after Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Union minister Birender Singh, senior BJP leader Anil Jain, held a five-hour-long meeting with a jat delegation led by AIJASS president Yashpal Malik at Haryana Bhawan in New Delhi.
The issue of reservation and was also discussed in the meeting, following which Haryana CM issued a press statement saying that it will provide the data on status of various classes to a State Backward Classes Commission by March 31 to expedite decision on reservation issue.
Malik said that the Jat rally will now be observed on February 18 as ‘Balidan Divas’.
The Haryana government had recently given its nod to withdraw 70 FIRs registered in connection with the Jat quota violence.
During the past nearly two years, the government has approved withdrawal of 223 cases, in which a total of 2,027 people are accused, Home Secretary S S Prasad said earlier.
These cases were filed in February 2016 after the Jat quota stir in the state turned violent. Around 30 people were killed and more than 300 people injured when the agitation resulted in large-scale violence.
