HYDERABAD: Speculation that the Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen will pick up an MLA or MLC for the coveted Mayor's post have been put to bed after the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation authorities said rules do not permit them to get elected to such a post. Only corporators are entitled to get elected to the post of mayor or deputy mayor.As per Section 20 of GHMC Act, the elected members as well as exofficio members shall elect one of its members to be mayor and another as deputy mayor by show of hands on party basis duly obeying the whip given by such functionary of the recognised political party. GHMC officials said as it is a Constitutional Act, the state government has no powers to amend it. The exofficio members consisting of MPs, MLAs and MLCs are only entitled to vote but are not entitled contest for the mayoral or deputy mayor's post, officials added.MLAs or MLCs have the opportunity to become a state Cabinet minister, deputy chief minister or chief minister but only corporators have a chance to become mayor and deputy Mayor, officials said.Elections on Dec 30: The elections to the office of mayor and deputy mayor will take place on December 30 at 11 a.m. The State Election Commission issued a notification to this effect on Monday. The posts fell vacant after mayor Banda Karthika Reddy and deputy mayor Jaffer Hussain resigned from their respective posts last week.As per the schedule, notice has to be given in FormII by the district collector authorised by the election authority and GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu calling for a special meeting on December 26 for conduct of the elections.As the election authority, the GHMC commissioner Krishna Babu will appoint any of the three district collectors under GHMC limits as special officer for conduct of the elections. GHMC is spread over three districts of Hyderabad, Rangareddy and Medak. Apart from the 150 corporators, 66 exofficio members are entitled to vote, which include 16 MPs, 25 MLAs and 25 MLCs.
