CHENNAI: Cops at the Greater Chennai Traffic Police headquarters were in for a rude shock when a man who went into the building on the pretext of meeting an officer, leapt to death from the terrace, at Kilpauk on Thursday.According to sources, around 12.30 pm, a visitor wearing black trousers and a striped white T-shirt walked into the traffic police headquarters building on the Poonamallee High Road. “He told the sentry that he wanted to meet an officer,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kilpauk) K Bhavaneeswari told Express. After being allowed to go inside, the man went up the staircase. A few minutes later, the police personnel heard a loud thud and saw his body sprawled amid the flowerpots in front of the building. They rushed the man, who was bleeding profusely, to the nearby Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.  Even as rumours that the man was a traffic cop started doing the rounds, senior police officials, including JCP (East) S N Seshasai and DCP (Traffic-West) Sushil Kumar, arrived at the spot and conducted an inquiry.A subsequent search of the dead man’s pockets revealed only a passport and a medical prescription. The passport identified him as 37-year-old S Anthony Samy, son of Siluvaikan of Kamanayakkanpatti in Kovilpatti, Thoothukudi district. It also indicated that he had returned from Southeast Asia only on December 16. With no clues about where Anthony had been lodging in the city, police relayed information to the police station in his native village to check his family background.Meanwhile, with the help of the medical prescription, they managed to trace his visit to a private hospital in the morning just before the incident. “He had complained to the doctors about pain in the hand and was advised to undergo an X-ray at KMC,” the DCP said. “He agreed, but instead of going to the hospital, entered the police station and resorted to the extreme step,” the police official added.Later, information from his family members revealed that Anthony had studied up to Plus Two and was an electrician. “He had been working in Singapore and Malaysia for the last seven years,” the DCP said and added, “All the time, he never visited his village even once, not even when his mother died. However, he regularly sent money to his family, defaulting only over the last one year.” It also came to light that Anthony was unmarried and had three brothers, who ran provision stores in their native district.A case has been registered under section 174 (unnatural death) of the CrPC.
