KOTTAYAM: As a relatively young and interdisciplinary field of Computer Science, data mining research offers immense scope for growth, said Sivadas P Nair, 42, the third-rank holder in the M.Tech examination conducted by the Mahatma Gandhi University, recently. Data mining is the process of extracting knowledge from an existing data set and transforming it to an understandable structure for further use. “Fetching data to be put to different uses is tough and research is on to make it easier,” said Sivadas who is looking ahead to do research on data mining. Sivadas, a research assistant at the Viswajyothi College of Engineering, Vazhakulam, Muvattupuzha, worked on mining ‘Frequent Patterns’ for his M.Tech studies and would conduct research on the same. Sivadas completed his M.phil from the Madurai Kamaraj University during 2007-08 and is planning to pursue research from IGNOU. Sivadas, who quit his job as software engineer at National Informatics Centre (NIC), Gandhinagar, Gujarat, in August 2004, said he had no regrets in losing the benefits offered by the government job, and expressed his happiness over the new success. Son of P Thankappan Nair and Ponnamma T Nair, Sivadas said more research into data mining would help various sectors such as market survey. “Data mining is one of the hot topics today. Several countries are conducting research on it,” he added. Sivadas’ wife Bindu is a school teacher and the couple has two children, Parvathy and Nandana.
