CHENNAI: PMK founder leader Dr S Ramadoss on Friday fervently argued for nationalisation of all private schools in Tamil Nadu to ensure access to a high standard of education to all besides halting collection of exorbitant fee by the managements.Presiding over a protest demonstration here organised by his party’s student wing — Tamilaga Manavar Sangam — to urge the State government to restrain schools from collecting unreasonable fee, Ramadoss said nationalisation of all private schools was the only way out to stop the ‘looting’ by schools under the guise of fees.“The government can do this through a single order and there is no other alternative to halt this menace. All the schools fleece parents by collecting usurious fee. Can any single school claim that they run the institution without a profit motive,” he demanded to know. Reiterating that children of even the poorest of poor must get education that is available to the kids of a billionaire, he stressed that the State take-over proposal alone could help achieve this goal of giving a standard, free and compulsory education to all.Suggesting a way out to the government if the school managements were to knock on the doors of the court, the PMK chief said the State could come out with a legislation and take the schools on a 99-year lease.Underlining the importance of physical exercises, he said schools should make children to play for a minimum of 2 hours every day. “Children should engage themselves in the games of their choice everyday.” Improving the quality of education in rural areas, importance of higher education and upgrading the teaching quality of teachers were other things the PMK leader stressed. PMK president GK Mani, former union ministers AK Murthy were among the leaders who participated in the protest.
