CUTTACK: Hiramani Hembram has shed her beard. Along with it the dread of being the butt of taunts, jokes and ridicule. The seven-year-old, who was suffering from a very rare medical condition called the giant congenital hairy nevus that manifested in gross hairy growth in the face. She is now looking forward to lead a normal life. After undergoing three surgeries at the Plastic Surgery department of the SCB Medical here over the last three months Hiramani has been completely freed from the hairy growth in the body. According to Professor and Head of Plastic Surgery Department AP Patnaik, she had been subjected to the procedures of extracting the affected skin patches and subsequent skin grafting. The operated areas are now healing and she was discharged on Monday. “The skin grafting would take about six months to settle. We expect almost complete normalcy in the face with minimum scars. Her condition would be monitored on regular basis and a comprehensive evaluation done after six months,” said Prof Patnaik. The daughter of a poverty-stricken daily wage earner from Bhubaneswar Khecheda Hembram, she had been afflicted by the condition since birth. But with passing time, the growth became more prominent and she looked weird. She had begun to develop severe inferiority complex due to cat calls by others in society as well as school. And as a consequence, she had even stopped going to school. “I can now go back to school,” a visibly-elated Hiramani said. After Hiramani was discovered with her unusual ailment, Bhubaneswar-based philanthropist Praveen Gupta and other well-intending people had taken responsibility of her treatment. The SCB on its part had also waived the fees and charges of treatment. “Due to these people, Hira has got new life,” Khecheda said.
