CHENNAI: In a case of major power failure, perhaps for the first time in recent history, the Chief Minister's office and the rest of the Secretariat, the High Court, the headquarters of the TANGEDCO, TANTRANSCO and TNEB Limited on Anna Salai, besides many parts of the city, including T Nagar, Egmore and Mylapore, had to go without power on Thursday. According to TANGEDCO officials, a series of tripping incidents at the Manali electricity substation, Ennore Thermal Power Station and GMR Vasavi power plant at Basin Bridge led to outages across the city.
The electricity officials had made alternative power supply arrangements to the city on Thursday as about 400 MW of power generation had to be halted for erecting 400 KV overhead lines in the periphery of suburban north Chennai for the NTPCTNEB joint venture thermal power plant at Vallur.By 9.15 am on Thursday, a conductor snapped at the Manali Substation which led to tripping of the entire transit facility. As a result, 150 MW of power could not be supplied to the city. As a chain reaction, sufficient quantum of power could not be drawn from the Ennore Thermal Power Plant.
