The police have cautioned the public against acting upon fake email and SMS messages.
A statement from the police headquarters here the other day said that several persons were receiving emails or SMS in the name of financial or government institutions asking for details of their bank accounts.
“The messages are intended to get the details of your bank accounts and to siphon off the receiver’s money. Recognised and reputed institutions will not ask for details via SMS or email. Hence don’t share your user name, password, banking details or email address with strangers,” says the release.
The hitech Crime Inquiry Cell of the Department has found that the fake messages are sent from some websites operated by fraudsters.
The police have also asked the public to inform them on receiving such messages.
