New Delhi: Trouble first started brewing for Madhur Bhandarkar’s Traffic Signal in Himachal Pradesh after the state called for ban of the film.
Bhandarkar’s film, about the lives of all those people who live and work around a traffic signal, refers to eunuchs 'kinners'.
The hill people in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh are also referred to by the same name and therefore the tribal folk have called for a ban on the film.
The distributor for the Punjab region stated that the film would not be released in Shimla and other parts of Himachal Pradesh. Ashok Ahuja, the head distributor also confirmed the same.
The people of Kinnaur were granted schedule caste status in 1956. Today the ‘kinners’ community comprises some of the richest farmers in Himachal Pradesh. The problems have just begun.
It is believed that on Sunday in New Delhi a huge crowd of beggars, eunuchs and NGOs protested in front of Rivoli in Connaught Place, where the film was being screened.
The crowd was agitated about the manner in which beggars and eunuchs have been depicted in the film. They also claimed that their livelihood has been affected as people viewing the film have stopped giving alms.
Meanwhile, Bhandarkar confirmed the news and said: “I am terribly disheartened at this spate of incidents around the country. I personally believe that these protests should not be encouraged as the film has already been censored.”
However, Preet Bedi the CEO of Percept Picture Company claimed he had no news about this issue.
