While the Department of Health was making efforts to render various health services to the public, people have every right to demand good health services from the department, Deputy Director of Health Services Dr Somasundaram has said.
He was speaking at a seminar organised by the Department of Health Services, in association with the Field Publicity Office and the local NGO Women’s Organisation for Rural Development (WORD), at Shenbakkam on Thursday.
Fifty per cent of deliveries are being conducted at PHCs in rural areas itself. In order to help poor families meet expenses, the State government was extending financial assistance through the Janani Suraksha Scheme and birth certificates were being issued by the PHCs. The public should also be aware of diseases and their preventive measures, Somasundaram added.
District TB control officer Dr Sivanandam and district entomologist Dr Gopalarathnam spoke about the vector borne diseases and preventive measures. Field publicity officer T Sivakumar and WORD director Maragadam spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, Collector Shankar flagged off a rally in which local body leaders, officials from various departments and students of the Government Higher Secondary School participated. They carried placards to spread awareness on health and methods of mosquito eradication. The Collector distributed prizes to healthy babies in a contest held for them.
