THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Mishaps at worksites are becoming a recurring story in the capital as two labourers working in a quarry near Vilappilsala lost their lives when they were crushed under the earth that collapsed over them on Wednesday. The deceased were identified as Anil Kumar, 37, of Chirathalackal House, Karodu near Vilappilsala and Suresh Kumar, 45, Malavila House, Malayam. Both Anil Kumar and Suresh Kumar were involved in drilling the rock with jackhammer around 10.30 am when the earth above them collapsed. Even though they were rushed to the Medical College Hospital, they could not be saved. They succumbed to their injuries at 11.30 am. The police said that the quarry belonged to one Prabhakaran of Oottukuzhy, near Karodu. The quarry is reported to be functioning in the area without the consent of the authorities. A case has been registered in the name of Prabhakaran in this regard. But the police have not taken him into custody as he was absconding.Anil Kumar is survived by wife Nisha and children Chandana Devi, Abhijith and Abhishek, while Suresh Kumar is survived by wife Sujatha and children Sunil Kumar, Sunila and Sujith. The relatives of the deceased complained that though both of them died in the morning, the inquest and post-mortem were not done on the same day. The bodies are now kept at the mortuary of the Medical College Hospital. However, the police said that the inquest and post-mortem had to be postponed to the next day as they were intimated late by the quarry authorities on the accident and the subsequent deaths. The officials of the Labour Department also did not visit the quarry and inspect the accident spot as they too were not informed about the incident.
