DHENKANAL: The recent downpour has taken its toll on the paddy cultivation. In Dhenkanal district, as many as 1,08,337 farm families have been engaged in multiple crop production. Around 1,22,000 agriculture labourers depend on paddy production for a livelihood. A team of agricultural officials took stock of the situation and reported to the State authorities recently. The recent rainfall has destroyed paddy in Gondia and Odapada blocks. Besides, crops have been affected by insects. The office of Deputy Director of Agriculture has provided plant protection equipment to all block agriculture outlets. Sprayers and pesticides are to be sold at 50 per cent subsidy. Plant protection equipment will be sold for ` 1,600 to ` 1,900 under subsidy provision. Deputy Director of Agriculture Laxmidhar Behera admitted to the damage of crops by pests and heavy downpour. Crops in all blocks have been equally affected, he said, adding that remedial measures have been taken. The State Government has decided to send a team of deputy directors, including Behera, and senior agriculture officials to Tripura to learn the use of technology on different lands and growth of various crops.
