BANGALORE: Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital organised an eye donation awareness rally in the city on Sunday. Starting at Freedom Park at 8 am, the rally comprised a group of cyclists accompanied by cars and bikes and ended at the National College in Jayanagar where the organisers had put up an information desk for imparting knowledge to the public about eye donation along with a registration desk. This rally was held as a part of eye donation fortnight being observed across the country.Eye donation does not require any special conditions unlike other organ donations. Any person can donate their eyes irrespective of vision strength, age or any other health conditions. The rally aimed at increasing awareness amongst the general public about the same.“I think this is an important issue, if we can help someone after we die, we certainly should do so without thinking twice,” said Pushkar, a participant in the rally.“India has a population of 19 million blind people. Three million blind people in India suffer from Corneal Blindness. Half of this number are children. One person donating his eyes will be able to give sight to four people,” said Dr Sri Ganesh, MD Nethradhama Hospital who also took part in the rally. “Countries like Australia have already passed legislation making eye donation compulsory, we must look into the same as well,” he added.Popular Kannada actor Ramakrishna flagged off the rally from Freedom Park. The District Commissioner of Lions Club, Vijaykumar Shetty was also present. The rally included a contingent of NCC cadets from colleges like Jain and KLE.
